Off to a great start from Raleigh to Roanoke, Day 1

August 4, 2010

A long and excellent day getting to know each other, enjoying a beautiful drive to Manteo, and receiving a gracious welcome from staff at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. After Security Guard Paul took group photos, he ushered us on to Dia Hitt, Aquarium Educator, who gave an excellent presentation of climate data on the Aquarium’s Science on a Sphere. We enjoyed seeing all of the animals in the touch tank and the shark tank. Thanks to all the Aquarium staff who helped get us off to a great start!

Great first day. Touched a very friendly Stingray. Wonderful Aquarium at Manteo. Attended a Science on a Sphere program. Great example of teaching in the round.

    Day 2, Virginia Aquarium.
Harbor seals, dolphins, and a little bit of driving. Shelly and I spotted the first dolphin of the day at sunrise in Manteo, NC. Later in the day, off of Cape Henry, VA we watched 50-75 dolphins actively swimming, jumping, and interacting.

Sue Barco shared some dolphin stories from her many years studying these animals, and Elizabeth Miller and Chris Witherspoon introduced us to aquarium operations, and resident harbor seals.

Sue’s observations regarding trends in earlier seasonal strandings, and dolphin births, was particularly interesting.

What a fantastic journey we are on! Packed with phenomenal moments of insight, wonder and enlightenment. Favorite moments today: Jellies, Amazon Rain Forest Frogs, Birds& Bats, Marsh Critters, and of course Dolphins, Dolphins, Dolphins!!!
